The Black Lips – Oh Katrina! (2007)

O Katrina! – Black Lips

What we have here is a song that thrives on toeing the unprecedentedly thick line between the artistic and political. There’s no intelligent way to say that this song is either about a girl giving Cole Alexander the could shoulder or the most devastating natural disaster in American history. It’s not about both, but it’s not about neither. If anything it’s about that line’s thickness, where the fury of young dudes scored, in whatever way, shape, or form, ends up carrying the news. We’ve seen this idea packaged and reapplied countless times, from Pete Townshend to Elvis Costello to Morrissey. Very few bands were able to dig as low into America’s bowels as publicly as The Black Lips and come out as a real, intelligent, fully formed American rock band. One of the best new bands to emerge this decade, The Black Lips are America’s formost band of ‘Crisitunity.
