Morrissey – All You Need Is Me (2009)
Oh, what to do with Morrissey. The hero for miserable losers for the better part of 25 years, Morrissey is a big enough star to fill concert halls, still brash enough to ruthlessly denounce his peers, and still sincere enough to maintain his publicly-expressed misery without appearing whiny or emo. It turns out that losers are a large enough class where they need a rock god to give them a musical hug, and Morrissey acknowledged his role with one of the best songs of his solo career. “All You Need Is Me” is a title and chorus line that no other rock star could pull off. It only works because of the comfort Morrissey has provided to tens of millions of Anglo-American miserable males. Morrissey’s celibacy has provided a tenderness to a genre and song style that always leans heavily on the side of braggadocio. If Kanye West had written this song, there would be no more Kanye West. When Morrissey writes it, it’s another warm glass of milk from an artist that has handed you hundreds.
